We are investigating a possible variant of the first edition. The books in this photo are both first editions. But the one on the left has a black and white end band, and the one on the right has a red and white end band. So far we have observed only red and white end band on later printings, and nearly all black and white end bands on first printings. These limited observations suggest that the bands started out as black and white, and were switched to red and white late in the first printing.
