The Martian was originally self-published under the author's own name in 2011 as installments online. The author was publishing his book one chapter at a time for free until people started telling him that they wanted the whole book. He then sold a Kindle version of the novel for 99 cents. Crown Publishing purchased the print rights and in 2014 re-published the novel for the first time as a bound book. Below are the first edition criteria for that book.
