The first edition was published in the UK. FIRST PUBLISHED 1969 is stated on the copyright page with no statements of subsequent impressions. Boards are brown cloth with gold lettering stamped on the spine and maroon top stain. Endpapers feature a drawing by Tom Adams. Dust jacket has gold lettering on cloth textured maroon. Back of the dust jacket panel has photo of the author. Back dust jacket flap has only reviews for two of the authors previous novels - The Collector and The Magus.

The first American edition was published by Little Brown. It states FIRST EDITION on the copyright page, and has 467 pages. Boards are gray cloth with silver lettering and gold decorated frame on spine, and gray endpapers.
