The first edition was published in the UK. FIRST PUBLISHED 1969 is stated on the copyright page with no statements of subsequent impressions. Boards are brown cloth with gold lettering stamped on the spine and maroon top stain. Endpapers feature a drawing by Tom Adams. Dust jacket has gold lettering on cloth textured maroon. Back of the dust jacket panel has photo of the author. Back dust jacket flap has only reviews for two of the authors previous novels - The Collector and The Magus.

The first American edition was published by Little Brown. It states FIRST EDITION on the copyright page, and has 467 pages. Boards are gray cloth with silver lettering and gold decorated frame on spine, and gray endpapers. The dust jacket features the same drawing used on the endpapers in the UK edition (the drawing is by Tom Adams). $7.95 is printed on the front dust jacket flap, the author's photo is on the back flap, and the number 290998 is printed on the bottom right of the back panel. There are no reviews anywhere on the dust jacket.
