Frequently Asked Questions
I am looking for a first edition of Quo Vadis. Can you help?
The first edition of Quo Vadis was published in 1896 in Poland. That is
the true first edition. You need lots of money and fluency in Polish to
locate this edition. I have never seen one.
The first UK edition was published by J.M. Dent and Company in 1896.
The first American Edition was published by Little, Brown and Company,
Boston, 1896. Then in 1897, Little, Brown and Company published a
"Popular Edition".
So the true first edition is not really available. Instead I would look for the first US edition or UK edition, which you should be able to find online for no more than $200. We don't think anyone is claiming that the UK edition came out before the US or vice versa. And we don't think it particularly matters because neither is the true first. Just make sure the publishing date is 1896 - not 1897 or
any other year. We don't expect you will find it in a dust jacket, and we would stay away from the 1897 Popular Edition - no reason to buy that when you can buy the earlier 1896 editions for around the same price.
