"First published in 1995 by Viking Penguin," is stated on the copyright page above the number line "10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1". Bound in gray paper boards with yellow lettering on a navy blue spine. Endpapers are also navy blue. The book was issued with a CD-ROM bound into the back containing the complete text of the book, hyperlinks to popular web sites from 1995, an interview with Bill Gates, video demonstrations of cutting edge technology of the era, and a web browser.

Warning: The book club edition has an identical copyright page as the true first edition. It too has a full number line with the same first published statement as the true first. However the book club edition binding is different. It has black paper boards with a blue paper spine, and white endpapers. The book club dust jacket does not have a price on the front flap. The back dust jacket flap is identical to the true first, and it too describes the CD-ROM that came with the first edition. However, it does not appear that the CD-ROM was bound into the book club edition.
