The true first edition was published in London by Secker & Warburg. It is bound in green cloth with red lettering, and First Published 1949 is stated on the copyright page. Printed in Great Britain by The Alcuin Press..Ltd., London is found on the bottom of the copyright page. There are two versions of the dust jackets, one green and one red. There seems to be no priority between them. The price of 10s.net is on the bottom of the front flap.
Below is the first American edition. first American Edition is stated on the copyright page, and no book club dot on rear board. It is bound in beige cloth. There are also two versions of the American dust jackets, one blue and one red. And here too, no priority has been established. The price of $3.00 is on the upper front flap.
